Classes are generally held Sundays @ 11:30 am in Room 217

It's hard raising a family in this culture. Mrs. Vernita Sheley invites all parents to join her for classes held at various times throughout the year. Her desire is to see every child grow in character, developing strong ethical and moral values. Parents will learn tools to help their children grow spiritually and socially.

Watch this section for information on new classes and schedules.

Community Outreach - Trunk or Treat

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

TRUNK OR TREAT

Since the 12th century, Christians have celebrated All Hallow’s Eve or as it has been called in recent years, Halloween. Historically, Halloween was a time to remember the saints who had passed from this life. The poor children would go door to door and receive food and treats as a remembrance of friends and family who had gone to be with the Lord. It was not until the mid-nineteenth century that Halloween became a popular holiday in America. Subsequent to its rise in popularity in the west, Halloween began to draw imagery from popular fiction and became associated with witches and demons.

Over the last 20 years in the U.S., there has been a spike in youth on youth violence, sexual assault, as well as drug and alcohol abuse on October 31. For many years, Church of the Highlands has been intentional about how we, as a church, address Halloween. In the past, we have held “Harvest Festivals” and “Bowling Nights” as outreach events on Halloween to provide a safe, wholesome alternative for our families and our community at large. This year, we will hold a Trunk or Treat as an outreach event to our community on October 31. This is an alternative to traditional “Trick or Treat” activities that is used by schools and churches all over the country both in rural areas where homes are far apart and places where going door to door is not safe. Volunteers will decorate their cars and open their trunks, which will be filled with candy and prizes. We will also have a couple of bounce houses and several carnival games. Our goal is to provide a safe, wholesome alternative to traditional Halloween activities, while using the opportunity to introduce our neighbors to our church family. Every family that participates will receive information about Highlands as well as an explanation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is our desire and prayer to follow Jesus' example of being light in the world and we feel serving our community in this way can be an opportunity to share our faith and bless the church and the larger community.

Please join us on Tuesday, October 31, 6-8pm in the lower parking lot for Highlands 1st Trunk or Treat Community Outreach Event! This will be a safe, fun, family-friendly evening for all. The church will provide the candy, bounce houses, games and more. Invite your friends and neighbors!

Please email connect@highlands.us if you would like to volunteer at the event or would like more information. Thanks!
